Evidence for sexual transmission of Marburg virus during the 2024 outbreak in Rwanda
摘要
Filoviruses have been shown to persist in semen after resolution of viraemia and clinical recovery, but confirmed sexual transmission of Marburg virus has not been previously reported. Here we report two epidemiologically and virologically linked pairs by patient’s history-taking during the 2024 Marburg outbreak in Rwanda. Two female patients were diagnosed with Marburg virus disease in October 2024, after reporting condomless sexual contact with male partners who recovered from Marburg virus disease. Marburg virus RNA was later detected in the semen of the two male survivors. These cases prompt policy revisions, including longitudinal monitoring and mandatory semen testing for survivors and structured education programmes for patients, close family members and the general population, in order to data balance public health protection with individual rights.
