<p>Sustainability metrics in agriculture are increasingly used to assess farm performance. We critically examine metrics and their use as a governance tool to enhance agricultural sustainability. We begin by synthesizing existing research and highlighting challenges with the current use of sustainability metrics. We then identify three priority areas for future research that are necessary for understanding the capacity for metrics to enhance the sustainability of agriculture and drive systemic change.</p>
