Leveraging parental processes in the treatment of childhood anxiety disorders: insights from developmental neuroscience

Pediatric anxiety disorders are common and debilitating and can be chronic. Although current treatments are efficacious for many, up to 50% of children do not sufficiently improve following current evidence-based treatment. Recent work underscores the potential for optimizing treatment based on individual variation in parenting behaviors. Here we propose that integrating findings from developmental neuroscience on neural processes related to parental involvement in childhood anxiety can optimize treatment. To support our proposal, we apply a developmental neuroscience lens to examine two specific, neuroscience-informed parental processes: (1) parental filtering of a child’s environment, and (2) parental buffering of a child’s fear responses. Improving the mechanistic understanding of how these treatment-relevant processes operate at the neural level could point toward personalized, tailored approaches to optimize treatment outcomes for pediatric anxiety.
