Behavioral evidence for visually dominant audiovisual motion integration

Accurate motion perception is crucial for navigating complex environments, where sensory information is often derived from multiple modalities. While multisensory cues improve performance in tasks involving stationary stimuli, the integration of dynamic motion cues is less understood. Here, we examined the nature of auditory and visual motion integration and determined whether attentional instructions modulate integration. Forty-eight participants performed direction discrimination tasks under auditory, visual, and audiovisual conditions, with cueing instructions to attend to one or both modalities. Discrimination sensitivities were extracted from auditory only, visual only, and cued AV conditions. Participants’ sensitivity in visual motion direction discrimination was higher than auditory, and audiovisual sensitivities were higher than either modality alone. Additionally, visual motion estimates remained stable during directional conflict, while auditory motion discrimination sensitivity decreased. Sensory dominance influenced both behavioral performance and the extent to which responses approximated reliability-weighted model predictions: visual-dominant participants performed better overall, whereas auditory-dominant participants were more closely captured by maximum likelihood estimation. These findings suggest that the perception of audiovisual motion is largely dominated by vision and is shaped by modality-specific cueing.
