Phytochemical and pharmacological potentials of edible Lannea coromandelica fruit: a GC–MS supported, in vitro, in vivo, and in silico studies

Lannea coromandelica (Indian ash tree) is a tropical deciduous plant belonging to the family Anacardiaceae, whose fruits are consumed by various bird species and monkeys. In some areas of North and West Africa, the fruits are incorporated into traditional culinary preparations, including sweets and puddings. In the present investigation, the n-hexane fruit extract of L. coromandelica (HFLC) was evaluated using in vitro, in vivo, and in silico approaches. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis was performed to investigate the phytochemical composition of HFLC. Antioxidant assays demonstrated IC50 values of 44.11 μg/mL (DPPH) and 134.10 μg/mL (ABTS). In vitro anthelmintic assays against Pheretima posthuma revealed a dose-dependent induction of paralysis and death, while the brine shrimp lethality assay indicated no cytotoxicity. Neuropharmacological evaluations showed that HFLC at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg produced significant anxiolytic effects in the elevated plus maze and hole-board test (p < 0.001), sedative effects in the open-field test and hole cross test (p < 0.001), and antidepressant properties in the tail suspension and forced swimming test (p < 0.001). GC–MS analysis identified 17 bioactive compounds, and subsequent molecular docking, along with ADME/T analysis, revealed strong binding affinities, favorable pharmacokinetic properties, and a safe toxicity profile. Overall, these findings indicate that HFLC possesses noteworthy antioxidant, anthelmintic, and neuropharmacological activities, meriting further investigation.
