Longitudinal associations between physiological characteristics and performance in elite speed climbers

Speed climbing is now contested as a standalone Olympic event, but longitudinal evidence on physiological characteristics associated with elite performance remains limited. This study examined repeated associations between physiological characteristics and speed-climbing time in elite athletes and explored whether these associations differed between men and women. Twenty-four Chinese national team speed climbers (12 men and 12 women) completed six monitoring blocks between 2022 and 2025. The cohort demonstrated elite performance levels, with mean climbing times of 5.19 ± 0.14 s in men and 7.03 ± 0.21 s in women. Linear mixed-effects models with athlete-specific random intercepts were used as the primary analysis. In men, countermovement jump height was the only retained performance-related correlate (β = − 0.562, 95% CI − 0.785 to − 0.339, p < 0.001; predictive R2 = 0.289, RMSE = 0.124 s). In women, short-duration lower-body relative anaerobic power was the main retained correlate (β = − 0.655, 95% CI − 0.892 to − 0.418, p < 0.001), with 30 s lower-body anaerobic power showing a smaller additional association (β = − 0.217, 95% CI − 0.396 to − 0.038, p = 0.019; predictive R2 = 0.401, RMSE = 0.157 s). Lower-body power measures were associated with elite speed-climbing performance in this cohort, but the models were not adjusted for monitoring block and should be interpreted as exploratory repeated-association models rather than fully time-adjusted predictive models.
