The lived experience of mask wearing among patients with chronic illnesses during the COVID-19 pandemic
摘要
The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated widespread mask-wearing as a key preventive measure. While masks played a crucial role in limiting virus transmission, their implications for individuals living with chronic illnesses remain underexplored. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of patients with chronic conditions regarding mask-wearing during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on physical, psychological, and social aspects. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to explore the lived experiences of individuals with chronic illnesses regarding mask-wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 15 participants. Data were analyzed following Colaizzi’s method to identify key themes and ensure validation through participant feedback. The central theme identified was “a revolution in lifestyle” encompassing two main categories: “behavioral adaptations for survival” and “emerging challenges in everyday life.” Mask-wearing during and after the pandemic generated complex, multifaceted experiences for patients with chronic conditions. Healthcare providers and policymakers should recognize these challenges and develop tailored interventions such as personalized guidance, improved mask design, and psychosocial support to enhance compliance and improve quality of life for this vulnerable population.
