Volcanic landscape, natural heritage management and virtual reality in the Jacomar volcano

This study addresses landscape analysis methodologies and examines the role of emerging technologies in the conservation, transformation, and potential trivialization of high-value geographic spaces. The Macaronesian region hosts a vast natural heritage and excellent landscapes that play an important role for tourism, the most important economic activity in these volcanic archipelagos. A great example is the Canary Islands, where the climatic conditions and the volcanic and biogeographic heritage are fundamental in the interpretation of their landscapes. The Jacomar volcano, situated on Fuerteventura, is analyzed from both geographical and landscape perspectives through an integrated landscape analysis approach and the methodology for identifying, evaluating, and diagnosing Landscapes of Natural Interest (LNI). Both the landscape analysis and resulting maps and 3D models integrate data collected from fieldwork, bibliographic and cartographic reviews, aerial photographs and orthophotos, and digital cartography (digital elevation and surface models built using LIDAR data). Geovisualization tools and materials have been developed to enhance the management of its natural and cultural significance, also for spatial analysis. A virtual tour has been developed to improve the dissemination of its heritage and to support the conservation of its geoecological richness. Virtual reality (VR) offers a valuable means of interpretation and conservation, complementing on-site visits and raising awareness of the fragility and vulnerability of protected natural areas.
