<p>Gd<sub>2</sub>Zr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>7</sub> (GZO) thermal barrier coating is famous for its excellent resistance to CaO-MgO-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-SiO<sub>2</sub> (CMAS) corrosion, and the judgment is that molten CMAS infiltration can be suppressed by its rapid reaction with GZO, but the judgment criteria are lack. In order to assess the corrosion resistance of thermal barrier coatings more rigorous and comprehensive, three criteria were established in this study: 1) thin reaction layer thickness, 2) thick residual melt thickness, and 3) compact and stable reaction layer. To validate these criteria, RE<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> doped GZO (RE-GZO, RE = Sc, Yb, Er, Y) samples were synthesized, and their resistance to CMAS and CMAS+ sea salt (CMAS + SS) was systematically compared based on the above criteria. Sc-GZO and Yb-GZO were found to have better corrosion resistance, and the mechanisms were clarified.</p>
