<p>Arthur Prophet grew up and was educated during World War II. The award of a Nuffield Dental Fellowship put him on the path to an academic career, gaining first a Diploma in Bacteriology and then a Doctorate in Dental Surgery. Fame came with the award of a Chair in Dental Surgery and then appointment as Director of Dental Studies at University College Hospital Medical School, later Dean of Dentistry and then Medicine. His bacterial knowledge supported his work on the causation especially of periodontal disease. His administrative abilities were especially useful during discussions on reorganisation of medical and dental education, particularly in London.</p>
