Objective <p>To investigate the phototherapy exposure in extremely preterm infants using different treatment protocols and devices.</p> Design <p>Cross-sectional observational study enrolling extremely preterm infants requiring light emitting diodes (LED) phototherapy during the first week of life. The duration of phototherapy applying various expert opinion-based treatment guidelines was calculated. Irradiance was measured, and spectral power was estimated.</p> Results <p>Forty-two preterm infants were studied. The phototherapy duration changed depending on the treatment protocol (overall <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) and ranged from 0 to 72 h, with a median coefficient of variation of 66.6 [44–124]%. The spectral power was significantly different depending on the LED device (overall <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) and ranged from 8.6 to 17.8 mW/nm, with a median coefficient of variation of 18.1 [18–18.3]%</p> Conclusions <p>The phototherapy exposure of preterm infants significantly varies both as cumulative duration of therapy and spectral power, due to different treatment protocols and devices.</p>

Objective
