<p>This study addresses the conservation challenges of archaeological sites in humid environments, focusing on a prehistoric site in China’s Jianghan River Valley. Through on-site investigation and analysis of archaeological data, we examined the value composition, disease causes, and soil properties of the core excavation area, D4 district. Our findings highlight the site’s significance as a settlement group centered on the city site. We identified high hydrophilic mineral content in the soil as the primary factor inducing cracking, while changes in groundwater level lead to instability and damage in the moat excavation area. We discuss preventive conservation measures for archaeological sites like this, providing technical support for excavation and conservation. Our research offers insights into the preservation of valuable historical sites in humid environments, emphasizing the need for careful conservation and management to ensure their long-term protection.</p>
