Genetic map and characteristic features of the Ancient Shudao heritage landscape based on NCCR theory

The Ancient Shudao historically linked China’s northwest and southwest regions as a vital transportation route. Over centuries of commercial and military interactions, numerous significant historical heritage sites emerged along the Shudao, forming the core of contemporary Shudao culture, particularly in Sichuan Province. This paper applies the NCCR (Nucleus-Cytoplasm Collaboration and Restriction) concept to analyze the landscape genes of Sichuan’s Shudao, clarifying the relationship between “nucleus” and “cytoplasm”. Key findings include: (1) Landscape elements consist of material aspects like architecture and military structures, and intangible aspects such as customs and daily life practices. (2) Core genes are key post stations, passes, and settlements, while cytoplasmic genes include ancient roads, natural landscapes, and historical buildings. (3) These genes interact, shaping the spatial expression of Shudao culture. The study maps the essential characteristics and hierarchical relationships of Shudao landscape genes, guiding urban planning and tourism development along the Shudao.
