Trade-offs and synergies of ecosystem services and their drivers in the forests of the South China Karst

With the implementation of the Grain-for-Green Program, karst forest ecosystems have experienced significant challenges, including biodiversity loss and a decline in multifunctionality. To address the emerging issues, we examined the interrelationships and driving mechanisms among forest ecosystem services (FES). The results showed the following: Water yield (+13.44%) and soil conservation (+4.94%) improved, while carbon storage (−0.03%) and biodiversity (−0.61%) declined. Overall, ecosystem service values decreased by 3% to 9.77% in karst gorges, karst fault basins, and karst middle-high mountains, with increases ranging from 4.35% to 18.67% across other geomorphological types. The interactions between services were predominantly characterized by trade-off relationships. Both trade-offs and synergies in FES were primarily positively influenced by precipitation and temperature, and negatively affected by population density. We concluded that adopting a framework based on internal and external drivers of ecosystems can guide the development of optimal forest management strategies.
