<p>This research investigates the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) within Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Suwon, South Korea to enhance visitor engagement while preserving its cultural and historical authenticity. The purpose of this study is to explore how spatially contextual digital interventions can deepen emotional connection, improve accessibility, and enrich historical storytelling for visitors. The methodology combines with an exploratory design-research study such as site visits, photographic documentation, visitor movement observation, and on-site interviews to develop a user-centered framework for immersive heritage enhancement. A prototype is proposed in which visitors access AR overlays through strategically placed QR codes to experience simulated interventions such as sensor-based lighting, interactive historical holograms, ambient soundscapes, and smart benches. Visitor responses collected through post-experience interviews and structured feedback suggest increased emotional engagement, enhanced understanding of historical narratives, and positive perceptions of cultural sensitivity across the proposed AR interventions. Narrative-driven and low-intrusion installations, particularly the holographic storytelling and ambient sensory elements, were consistently described as intuitive, respectful, and well-integrated with the site’s atmosphere. Participants noted that the AR overlays appeared to enhance the heritage experience without disrupting the site, highlighting the value of context-aware immersive storytelling in maintaining its cultural integrity. This study contributes to the knowledge on smart and experiential architectural design by showing how user-centered, low-intrusion AR can be integrated into cultural heritage sites. Through site observation, visitor experience mapping, and immersive prototyping, it proposes a framework that emphasizes emotional engagement, narrative clarity, and spatial integrity, offering a transferable design framework for balancing technological innovation with cultural preservation.</p>
