摘要

Background

There are numerous studies in the literature on how a successful relationship between a midwife and an expectant mother is formed. However, it remains unclear how a midwife can actually build a successful relationship with a pregnant woman.

Objective

The study aimed to identify specific activities that midwives undertake to build relationships with pregnant women under a continuity of carer model in German-speaking countries. It is also of interest to explore the extent to which a professional practice is evident.

Methods

Underpinned by a qualitative descriptive design, 14 midwives working under a continuity of carer model were interviewed using Kruse’s semi-narrative interview method, which provides interview situations with more openness for the interviewees than semi-structured interviews. The data were analysed using a content structuring qualitative content analysis, according to Kuckartz.

Results

Midwives use the first meetings with pregnant women to develop a common mission and establish an interpersonal connection. The agreement between a midwife and an expectant mother to work together creates a working alliance between them. Midwives then continue to develop a reciprocal relationship of trust with the expectant mother.

Conclusion

The results show that midwives consciously plan and organise the relationship-building process but also demonstrate uncertainties in some areas and a partially insufficient professional practice.
