Seed germination and early growth of weedy Fallopia convolvulus under environmental variables: Implications for Management
摘要
Fallopia convolvulus, causes significant problems in cultivated fields due to its twining growth around the stems of the crop plants. The impact of environmental (temperature, osmotic potentials, NaCl concentrations and acidity) and management factors (high temperature and burial depth) on germination and emergence was investigated. The results showed that it germinated over a wide range of temperatures (below 5 °C and above 40 °C). The beta model estimated the cardinal temperatures as 0.37 °C (base), 26.75 °C (optimum), and 45.19 °C (ceiling). As the osmotic potential increased from -0.6 to -1.2 MPa, seed germination decreased. With increasing salinity stress, the germination percentage decreased to less than 50% at a NaCl concentration of 120 mM (12 ds/m). Seed viability ranged from 100% at 80 °C to 20% at 120 °C, with no viability at 140 °C. At a soil burial depth of 12 cm or more, no seedlings were able to reach the soil surface. Therefore, adjusting sowing depth and timing to create unfavorable conditions for germination and managing salinity and osmotic stress significantly reduce the growth of F. convolvulus. Crop rotation, cover cropping and mechanical methods such as deep tillage and mulching may be implicated.
