Assessing field emergence of selected Sri Lankan heirloom rice cultivars using the accelerated ageing test
摘要
The accelerated aging (AA) test is a potential vigor test for assessing field emergence (FE) of rice seeds. The present study was conducted to select an AA treatment to assess relative FE of wet-direct seeded heirloom rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars of Sri Lanka. Seeds of nine popular heirloom rice cultivars representing different grain types, maturity periods and pericarp colours were subjected to AA at 42, 43, 44 and 45 °C for 72 and 96 h, standard seed germination (SSG) at 25 °C and FE tests under field conditions. The associations of SSG and AA with FE were evaluated using correlation analysis. The AA treatment 42 °C/72 h showed the highest correlation with FE (r = 0.9620) across cultivars and it was stronger than the correlation between SSG and FE (r = 0.7197). Therefore, the AA treatment 42 °C/72 h can be used as a vigor test to estimate FE of heirloom rice cultivars grown in Sri Lanka under wet direct seeded condition.
