A review: hepatoprotective compounds and its mechanism of medicine-food homology resources

Medicine-food homology resources possess distinct therapeutic effects in ameliorating hepatotoxicity induced by exogenous agents (chemicals, drugs, alcohol) and immune-mediated liver injury. In this paper, 60 medicine and food homologous materials in health food for liver injury were obtained using the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) platform, and their effective ingredients for treating liver injury (including triterpenoids and their glycosides, flavonoids, phenols, alkaloids and polysaccharides) were also summarized through the China National Knowledge Network (CNKI) database, Pubmed database and Web of Science database. The structure–activity relationship between the active ingredients and hepatoprotective effects were summarized (triterpenoids and their glycosides: C-17 side chain with α,β-stationary ketones; flavonoids: the planar double bond structure at positions C-2 and 3-3 of the C-ring; polyphenols: o-diphenol hydroxyl). In addition, the hepatoprotective mechanisms of these compounds were reviewed and summarized, including regulating oxidative stress through Nrf2 signaling pathway, inhibiting of inflammation response through NF-κB signaling pathway, regulating of apoptosis and autophagy signaling pathway. This paper provided theoretical basis for the clinical application of medical-food homologous resources in protecting and alleviating liver injury, and promoted the development and application of functional foods with hepatoprotective effects in the future.
