Sawtoothed grain beetle (Oryzaephilus surinamensis) in stored dates: biology, damage, and advances in sustainable management

The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a significant crop in arid regions worldwide. However, stored dates are particularly vulnerable to O. surinamensis, a major pest that directly compromises fruit quality, accelerates spoilage, and undermines the economic value of date harvests in producing countries. Date palms are cultivated in a wide range of varieties worldwide, with over 300 distinct types recognized. However, these valuable crops are highly vulnerable to significant damage from insect pests, which can threaten both yield and quality. Among the many food products threatened by O. surinamensis, stored dates are particularly vulnerable. Dates that have been severely infested by this beetle will eventually rot and become damaged, making fruit unfit for human consumption. This infestation leads to a decline in both the quality and market value of the dates. O. surinamensis is common in stored goods and can infest many kinds of date fruits, controlling it with an integrated pest management (IPM) approach is essential. One essential step is cleanliness, which is routinely cleaning storage places to get rid of food leftovers and possible breeding grounds. Although chemical management techniques, such applying pesticides, have their uses, they should be applied with caution to reduce hazards to the natural world and public health. Plant-based insecticides and repellents have potential as more environmentally friendly substitutes for manmade chemicals. Future research should focus on developing eco-friendly pesticides, improving storage methods, and breeding pest-resistant date palm varieties. Collaboration, monitoring, and extension services are necessary to sustainable pest management and environmental protection.
