Tyranny of the Majority and the Disappearance of Privacy in the French TV Show Nu
摘要
The present article aims to explore the concepts of privacy and freedom in the French TV show Nu [Nude] (OCS Max. Capa Drama, 2018) in order to examine how the show becomes a manifestation of John Stuart Mill’s idea of the “tyranny of the majority”. The central questions of the study, therefore, are: What is the relationship between the disappearance of privacy and the loss of individuality and freedom in Nu? How does Nu embody John Stuart Mill’s concept of “tyranny of the majority”? To answer these questions, the TV show Nu is analyzed episode by episode in the context of Mill’s theory, in an attempt to understand how a democratic government gradually transforms into a totalitarian state, where people are under constant surveillance and have no privacy. As portrayed in the show, citizens’ freedom and sense of identity are often suppressed through majority vote. The majority does not always realize the consequences of their decisions, and individuals living under democratic governments can be easily manipulated. In such a world, minorities are marginalized, and those who oppose the majority rule are either forced to conform or face imprisonment and silencing.
