Development and characterization of a phytophosphatidyl complex formulation from Chrysanthemum morifolium for potential anti-inflammatory application

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) data, non-communicable diseases driven by Chronic inflammatory process are the major contributions in the mortality and morbidity conditions worldwide. Chronic inflammatory diseases are the reason for most of the deaths. 3 in 5 global populations, encompassing both developed and developing countries, are suffering with inflammation. Inflammation is occurring in long-term conditions and short-term conditions like autoimmune disorders, infections etc., respectively. Although the usage of anti-inflammatory agents derived from natural origin is wide still their clinical application have limitations like poor solubility, instability and low oral bioavailability. In order to overcome the stated limitations phytophosphatidyl complexes is a promising delivery system but the usage of these complexes with Chrysanthemum morifolium (C. morifolium) is unexplored. The present work investigates and addresses the gap between formulation and evaluation a novel C. morifolium–phosphatidylcholine complex with enhanced drug entrapment and bioactivity which offers therapeutic efficiency. According to scientific investigations, the anti-inflammatory property exhibited by C. morifolium were mostly due to the presence of hetero spiro olefin compounds. In the current work, a C. morifolium ethanolic extract-loaded phytophosphatidyl complex was generated using the solvent evaporation method. In this method, various proportions of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and C. morifolium ethanolic extract (CMEE) were added to ethanolic solvent and evaporated to produce phyto phosphatidylcholine complex. Among the prepared formulations, the formulation with 1:1.5 ratio of herbal extract and PC exhibited higher anti-inflammatory activity, with 98% of drug entrapment being observed. The anti-inflammatory albumin denaturation results data subjected to one-way ANOVA revealed that there is a significant difference at P < 0.05. C. morifolium is a promising herbal medicine for various inflammatory conditions. Phytophosphatidyl complex formulation is showing a good nexus between the oral administration and biological activity.
