<p>Eastern white pine has a centuries-long history in the northeastern American landscape, sometimes referred to as “the tree that built America.” This tree is the dominant softwood timber species in the northeast, however the region’s harvests are often dominated by logs yielding low-grade lumber, which is difficult for mills to market and profitably sell. Using an individual log-based sawmill study in the Adirondacks of New York, this study identified two easy-to-measure attributes that can help landowners, loggers, foresters and mills better understand the potential lumber recovery and value of their eastern white pine: quantification of black knots, and live crown impacts. These findings suggest that silvicultural management for high-quality, high-value eastern white pine sawtimber should focus on the development of trees with long live crowns and few surface black knots.</p>
