摘要

Purpose

This study indicates the potential utilization of waste natural rubber latex gloves as an alternative soil amendment to enhance soil fertility and promote plant growth. The research aims to evaluate whether processed waste gloves can improve soil nutrient content and accelerate plant germination and biomass development.

Methods

Laboratory-scale and field-scale experiments were conducted using onion, bean, Napier grass, and flowering plants. Waste natural rubber latex gloves were washed, sterilized using a diluted antimicrobial solution containing chlorhexidine and ethanol, dried, crushed into fine particles, and incorporated into soil at 10% (w/w). The selected loading ratio was based on preliminary trials considering soil workability, moisture retention, and mixing uniformity. All laboratory experiments were performed in triplicate to improve statistical reliability. Plant growth was evaluated through germination observations, plant height, fresh and dry biomass measurements, and soil elemental analysis. Soil analysis was carried out using standard agricultural methods including the Kjeldahl method for nitrogen, Olsen method for phosphorus, and flame photometry for potassium determination.

Results

The glove-treated soil exhibited approximately 20–35% higher biomass growth and faster germination compared to control soil. Soil elemental analysis revealed improvements in phosphorus (7.94%), copper (36.07%), manganese (51.90%), and sulfur (5.75%) contents, while soil pH remained stable. Statistical analysis demonstrated significant enhancement in plant growth parameters for treated samples compared to control samples (p < 0.05). The results indicate that processed waste latex gloves positively influenced soil nutrient availability and plant development.

Conclusions

Processed waste natural rubber latex gloves can serve as an effective soil conditioner and nutrient enhancer. Their utilization offers a sustainable solution for waste management while improving soil fertility and crop productivity. This approach supports circular economy practices and promotes environmentally friendly agricultural development.
