Epidemiological factors and their associations influencing scab (Venturia inaequalis) disease epidemic development in apple production fields around Chencha Highlands, southern Ethiopia

Apple productivity is highly impacted by scab disease caused by Venturia inaequalis worldwide. This study aimed to determine scab prevalence, intensity, and association between environmental factors and agronomic practices. Data was gathered from 164 apple orchards using a multistage random sampling technique during the 2021 and 2022 growing years. A logistic regression model was used to examine the relationship between biophysical factors. Findings unveiled scab was 100% prevalent with varied intensities in apple orchards. In 2022 (67.64 and 33.81%), there was a higher mean incidence and severity compared to 2021 (52.68 and 28.17%), respectively. The mean incidence and severity of Chencha 02 FAs were exceeded by 18.77, 27.21, 32.58, and 42.10% and 24.91, 23.09, 29.48, and 43.25% over Mesho, Kale, Yora, and Losha FAs, respectively. There were significant (P < 0.0001) associations between scab intensity and FAs, altitude, planting material sources, tree age, cropping system, disease status and management, growth stage, tree and weed management, weather variables, and yield. In the model, such variables highly contributed to the high incidence (> 60%) and severity (> 31%). Whereas recently planted orchards (≤ 5 years), mixed crops with legumes, earthing-up and composting trees twice a year, and pruning with appropriate sanitation contributed to low incidence (≤ 60%) and severity (≤ 31%). Overall, results indicated that scab epidemic development was significantly affected by environmental factors and agronomic practices. Findings could serve as baseline information for developing sustainable management strategies that would ensure apple production across similar agro-ecologies. Following intercropping or mixed cropping, good agronomic practices, and proper disease management practices are suggested to manage scab disease.
