<p>The species of <i>Saintpaulia</i> and <i>Streptocarpus</i> species are ecologically relevant sciophytes and world-wide ornamentally important indoor plants with centers of diversity in northeastern Tanzania. Many of their species are critically endangered or near-threatened, and little is known about their demography. I examined the distribution and abundance of <i>Saintpaulia</i> and <i>Streptocarpus</i> species in Udzungwa Scarp Nature Reserve, which includes critical habitats for species of these genera. I used a systematic sampling consisting of five belt transects across an altitudinal gradient, each consisting of ten 0.3&#xa0;ha subplots. Individuals of each species of <i>Saintpaulia</i> and <i>Streptocarpus</i> were tallied. <i>Streptocarpus holstii</i> was the most abundant (93%) compared to <i>S</i>. <i>caulescens</i> (7%). The average abundance of <i>Streptocarpus</i> species per ha in USNR was 316.44 ± 4.66 individuals/ha, with over 70% of the <i>Streptocarpus</i> species encountered at a single subplot at 356&#xa0;m in elevation. The <i>Streptocarpus</i> species were sparsely distributed between 353 and 1098&#xa0;m in elevation. <i>Streptocarpus</i> had an aggregated distribution in Udzungwa, and <i>Saintpaulia</i> is uncommon. The results back up conservation priorities and habitat management plans.</p>
