Influence of local factors on saltmarsh distribution and population structure from the coast of Odisha, India

Saltmarsh ecosystems are salt tolerant ecologically important coastal seascapes that provide various ecosystem services. Despite their ecological importance, in India, these ecosystems are generally overlooked and one of the least studied ecosystems. This study surveyed four estuarine sites ( i.e., Chandipur, Dhamra, Astaranga, and Rushikulya ) along the coast Odisha, India to catalogue the distribution and current population morphometric traits status under the influence of habitat disturbances (e.g., various coastal developmental activities). Other than field surveys, a literature survey was carried out to document the list of various saltmarsh species previously recorded (till 2023) for the coast of Odisha, India. Field and literature surveys, indicate presence of eight (field surveys; 7 and literature; 1) saltmarsh species belonging to five families. Saltmarsh species like Porterasia coarctata, Myirostachia wightiana and Sporobolus virginicus are most common saltmarsh species distributed across our study sites, whereas Heliotropium curassavicum was the least common species. This study also includes the addition of S. virginicus to the saltmarsh species list of Odisha and India. Saltmarsh distribution was positively influenced by salinity changes and negatively by temperature. Saltmarsh population structure was more location-specific and was negatively influenced by sediment N and organic matter content except for Sesuvium portulacastrum that showed positive relationship with sediment N content. This study serves as a baseline of density and morphometric features data for various saltmarsh species of India and highlights the need for increased monitoring and assessment of these ecosystems to reap the benefits of saltmarsh ecosystems services; from climate change mitigation to coast stabilization.
