Land productivity and economic benefit of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) intercropping using intercrop indices and Partial budget analysis in Lasta District, North Eastern Ethiopia

Intercropping is one of the basic climate smart agriculture practices to reduce the effect of climate change on crop production. In the dry land areas like Lasta district, planting two more crops is important to reduce the crop fail due to erratic rainfall. Shortage of cultivated land coupled with erratic rainfall affected the nutritional and economic balance of the farmers in Lasta district. A field experiment was conducted during the 2022 main cropping season to measure the land productivity and economic feasibility of sorghum-mung bean intercropping for enhancing the productivity of the systems. RCBD factorial combinations of three population densities of mung bean (50%, 67%, and 100%) with three-row arrangements (1sorghum:1 mung bean, 2sorghum:1 mung bean, and 3sorghum:1 mung bean), with sole sorghum and sole mung bean as check was used. Data on phenology, growth, yield, and yield-related parameters of the experimental crops were taken and analysed using SAS soft wear. Land equivalent ratio, competitive ratio, area time equivalent ratio, monetary advantage index, and marginal rate of revenue (MRR) analysis were used for estimating the land productivity and economic feasibility of the intercropping. The highest LER (1.35), the highest monetary advantage index (21,493 ETB ha-1), the maximum net benefit (83,309 ETB ha-1), and acceptable MRR% (125.34) were obtained in 1sorghum:1 mung bean with 50% population density of mung bean. Intercropping sorghum in a 1:1 row arrangement within 50% population density of mung bean gives up to 21.43% and 45.27% Ethiopian birr (ETB) ha-1 net benefit advantages respectively than planting sorghum and mung bean alone. Therefore, 1sorghum:1 mung bean row arrangements with a mung bean population density of 50% are recommended for intercropping in the target area, based on its land productivity and economic benefit.
