Comparative growth performance and economic viability of three catfish species in cage culture in the Gurukchi River of Bangladesh: a feasibility study

Cage aquaculture has evolved as an important component of food production in Bangladesh. To determine the viability of catfish cage culture, a study was carried out in the Gurukchi River of Bangladesh for 93 days. Walking catfish (Clarias batrachus), pabdah catfish (Ompok pabda), and Thai pangas (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) were stocked in T1, T2, and T3, respectively, each with three replications. The fish in all treatments were fed commercial feed twice a day at 6% of their body weight and were sampled monthly to compare growth rates. At the end of the experiment, the mean weight gains of T1, T2, and T3 were 146.34 ± 8.75 g, 52.98 ± 3.54 g, and 405.65 ± 24.02 g, respectively. There were statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in apparent feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, total yield, and final weight among the treatments. In one-way ANOVA and the DMRT test, the significantly highest (p < 0.05) benefit-cost ratio was accounted for P. hypophthalmus (1.20 ± 0.06), followed by C. batrachus (1.12 ± 0.05), and O. pabda (0.99 ± 0.10). Overall, P. hypophthalmus appears to be the most suitable species for cage culture in the river. This research can guide fish farmers in selecting species for cage culture operations to optimize growth and profitability.
