Blood meal, feather meal, and spray-dried blood cells in dairy diets: a review

Rising costs and environmental concerns are driving the search for sustainable alternatives to soybean meal (SBM), the predominant protein source in dairy cattle diets, due to its economic volatility and environmental footprint. This review examines blood meal (BM), feather meal (FM), and SDBC as potential protein sources for dairy diets, focusing on their chemical composition, nutrient utilization, and effects on lactating dairy cows’ performance. These animal-derived proteins offer high protein content and balanced amino acid profiles, making them viable SBM substitutes. BM and FM are known for their high rumen undegradable protein (RUP) content, which refers to the portion of dietary protein that escapes degradation in the rumen and is digested in the small intestine, thereby supporting greater amino acid absorption and milk production. Similarly, SDBC provides additional nutritional benefits, including high digestibility and antioxidant properties. Despite advantages, challenges such as palatability, amino acid imbalances, and digestibility issues limit their widespread adoption. Proper processing and supplementation can address these concerns, promoting a more sustainable approach to dairy nutrition. Future research should investigate higher inclusion levels of BM, FM, and SDBC in dairy diets to enhance our understanding of their effects on nutrient utilization, milk production, and overall sustainability.
