Background/objectives <p>Triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index) is one of the surrogate markers of insulin resistance (IR). A large number of original and meta-analysis studies have assessed the diagnostic and prognostic value of the TyG index in different diseases. We evaluated the development of trends in this field using a bibliometric analysis.</p> Methods <p>Articles and review articles from 2008 to 2024 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. Export complete records for co-authorship, citation, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis by countries, institutions, authors, journals and keywords using Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer, the Scimago Graphica Setup and CiteSpace.</p> Results <p>A total of 1048 articles and review articles were identified. The volume of research literature related to the TyG index has exhibited a notable upward trend. On a global scale, China holds a significant advantage in this field. Shouling Wu was the most prolific author. The most authoritative journal in this field was "Cardiovascular Diabetology". Focus on the predictive value of TyG index in cardiovascular diseases and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Emerging research directions encompass arteriosclerosis, hyperuricemia, cerebral small vessel disease, and gestational diabetes. Database and cohort studies are becoming prominent trends.</p> Conclusions <p>The TyG index has garnered widespread attention among researchers due to its association with a variety of diseases. As an alternative biomarker for IR, the TyG index is readily accessible in clinical settings and has demonstrated potential in disease screening and risk assessment. This article provides a comprehensive overview of existing research on the TyG index, offering valuable insights into its applications.</p>
