Hyperthyroidism: a review of the African American population

Hyperthyroidism is a condition that involves excessive production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. Prevalence of the condition is shown to vary based on age, sex, ethnicity, environmental factors, iodine deficiency and rare genetic abnormalities. Thyrotoxicosis, a clinical state associated with excess thyroid hormone has various presentations ranging from asymptomatic to life threatening thyroid storm. The complications of hyperthyroidism affect major organ systems such as the Gastrointestinal, Cardiovascular and Neurologic systems. Treatment of hyperthyroidism is targeted at both symptomatic and hormonal control.
