<p>Traumatic and ischemic brain injury occur frequently around the world, yet prevention and treatment opportunities are lacking. When such an injury occurs, there are a series of complex neurophysiological responses that ensue to combat the injury. Microstructural damage of the brain and eye often occur simultaneously due to the resulting inflammatory and oxidative processes taking place. Macular pigment carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin derived from the diet accumulate in the macula of the retina and may mediate anti-inflammatory and oxidative responses to injury in humans. Evidence from the ocular literature suggests that supplementation with these carotenoids may enhance visual and cognitive performance, while also delaying disease progression. Despite their known benefits and the prevalence of brain injury, few studies have attempted to assess the effectiveness of macular pigment carotenoids for brain injury prevention and treatment. Therefore, the purpose of this perspective piece is to understand the extent and type of evidence available concerning the use of macular pigment carotenoids in brain injury samples and to highlight opportunities for continued investigation.</p>
