摘要

Skyscrapers having a height of 300 m or more, but less than 600 m, are designated as supertall buildings. The first supertall building was constructed in New York City in the year 1930. During the next few decades, only a few more supertall buildings were constructed in the cities of Chicago, New York City, and Houston, all in the USA. The first supertall building outside the USA was built in the year 1990, and gradually it became a global phenomenon. Since 2010, a dramatic increase in the number of supertall buildings has been observed. Construction of supertall buildings is an expanding field of study, driven by advancements in technology and the need to address various emerging challenges in a constantly evolving world. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the engineering factors and non-engineering factors that shaped the current trends of supertall building construction. The chief engineering factors are developments in high-strength materials, innovative structural systems, vertical transportation systems, aerodynamic shaping of structures, and supplemental damping technology; while the non-engineering factors include urbanization, economic growth, global competition, architectural ambition, and symbolic significance. The historical background leading to the emergence of supertall buildings is discussed. The paper also looked into the current challenges and explored the future directions for advancements in this rapidly evolving domain.
