<p>The small gobioid fishes of the family Butidae, commonly known as "gudgeons" or "sleepers," inhabit tropical freshwater and brackishwaters across the Indo-Pacific region. Of the ten recognized species in the diverse genus <i>Butis</i> Bleeker, six are reported from India’s marine and inland habitats. Despite extensive surveys, only two species, <i>B. butis</i> and <i>B. koilomatodon,</i> have been documented in Kerala. This study confirms the identity of the little-known gudgeons of the genus <i>Butis</i> in Vembanad-Kole, a Ramsar site in Kerala, India, using morphological and molecular analyses. Additionally, it records the first occurrence of <i>Butis</i><i> gymnopomus</i> on India’s west coast. These results stress the ecological importance of the Vembanad-Kole wetlands and contribute to regional fish biodiversity better.</p>
