摘要

The provenance of eastern Dahomey basin sediments has not been studied in detail, which has led to insufficient information about the alluvial deposits along the coastal environment of the basin. Through the present work, an attempt has been made to infer the provenance, tectonic settings, and economic implications of Dahomey basin sediments based on their qualitative and quantitative analysis. The heavy minerals serve as veritable indicators for source area and provenance determination. Thirty (30) sediment samples were collected and subjected to heavy mineral analyses and quantified by viewing them under a microscope. The results show that the heavy mineral assemblages of the study area are dominated by opaque minerals, including limonite, followed by orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene (pyroxene group), hornblende, tremolite, and actinolite (hornblende group), as well as tourmaline, zircon, and rutile. The heavy minerals analysis revealed the presence of both basic and acidic igneous and metamorphic rocks, coupled with reworked sedimentary rocks from source areas. This indicates a multiple depositional environment with varied intensity of weathering. Heavy minerals have significant economic importance due to their series of industrial applications, such as their use in refractories, ceramics, nuclear energy generation, and gemstone production.
