摘要

This study descriptively surveyed the climate change awareness of farmers, fishermen, and teachers and the adaptation mechanisms adopted by them in the five states in southeastern Nigeria. The study was guided by four research questions and a null hypothesis. The study population (464,005) comprises 378,222 registered farmers, 43,728 registered fishermen, and 42,055 secondary school teachers. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used in selecting 335 farmers, 26 fishermen, and 23 teachers. Two sets of structured questionnaires, which were face-validated by three different experts, were used for data collection. Farmers, fishermen, and teachers have climate awareness as a common item, while on adaptation strategies, they have different items. Administration and retrieval of completed questionnaires lasted for three weeks. At the end of the exercise, 384 questionnaires were administered to the respondents and 380 copies of the questionnaire were used for data analysis because 3 copies of the questionnaire were wrongly filled by farmers and a copy of the questionnaire was also wrongly filled by a fisherman. Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient was used to test the instrument's internal consistency. Data were analysed using statistical procedures of mean and standard deviation techniques. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the null hypothesis at a 0.05 significance level. There were significant differences in climate change awareness among the three groups (farmers, fishermen and teachers). It was recommended that the climate change unit in the Federal Ministry of Environment should provide timely and adequate information on climate change and its impact to farmers, fishermen and teachers to enable them pre-empt adverse climatic conditions and appropriately adjust their activities.
