Optimizing the growth and yield of lentil (Lens culinaris) genotypes under different phosphorus and zinc fertilization

Lentil (Lens culinaris) fertilization significantly influences growth, yield, and nutrient uptake. While phosphorus (P) promotes root development, zinc (Zn) is essential for reproductive processes. A field trial was conducted during the 2017–2018 growing season to investigate the combined effect of P and Zn application. The experiment used a factorial randomized complete block design, with treatments comprising three P and three Zn levels (0%, 50%, and 100% of the recommended doses) and six lentil genotypes (Masoor-2006, Chakwal Masoor, NIA Masoor-2005, Mansehra-89, Masoor-85, and Markaz-09). Among the treatments, the T6 (50% Zn + 100% P) showed the most promising results, increasing grain yield by 42%, 1000-grain weight by 37%, and the number of pods by 45% compared to the control (T1). NIA Masoor-2005 exhibited the highest efficiency in yield and nutrient uptake, followed by Markaz-09. This study recommends the combined application of 100% P and 50% Zn of the recommended doses can enhance lentil productivity and nutrient uptake, supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
