摘要

Aquatic macrophytes form an important component of freshwater systems and they perform a substantial role in the ecological and socio-economic functioning of this habitat. There has been a rise in problems related to the presence of aquatic plants on water bodies, which includes reduction in access to freshwater extraction, reduction in the harvest of fish, decrease in water transparency, light and oxygen, causing water traffic, etc., making monitoring of these plants very essential. Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing technologies provide the opportunity for a comprehensive assessment and monitoring of these plants. These technologies help in the geospatial description of the aquatic weeds by offering suitable spatial and temporal scales resolutions and monitoring which has become essential due to the spatial extent and inaccessibility of the river using the traditional ground survey method. The study aimed at monitoring and classifying the spread of aquatic weeds and introduce new approach into the detection, observation, and mapping of the weeds using vegetation and water indices calculated from multispectral remote sensing (RS) data from Landsat images. Aquatic plants increased from year 2010, 2015 to 2021 with 13.28%, 15.98% and 17.28% respectively. Farmlands decreased from 39.48 to 28.13% between years 2010 and 2021. NDVI increased for all the years at 2.45 per annum. The evidence for an increased trend in vegetation growth and the spatially explicit assessment could guide future management systems to sustainably use and control these plants. The findings will be helpful for managers in defining and implementing strategies to carry out early eradication of the aquatic weeds that could be easily assessed and planned making use of the important information provided by the technologies.
