摘要

Background

Postgraduate training in general practice poses organisational challenges for trainee doctors, as the medical education regulations require several job rotations. The aim of this study was to collect tips and advice from young doctors on what they wished they had known before starting their training to help them prepare for further training and their subsequent work as general practitioners.

Materials and methods

In October 2024, 509 trainee doctors on the email distribution list of the Berlin Competence Centre for Further Training were invited to participate in an online survey. The survey consisted of a single open-ended question: ‘What would I have liked to know before starting my postgraduate medical education and unfortunately only learned/understood later?’ The aspects initially mentioned were categorised into subject areas after thematic analysis [18]. The subject areas and associated examples were sent back to the trainee doctors with a request to comment and to add any missing aspects.

Results

In all, 32 trainee doctors initially responded to the survey and provided 114 aspects relating to the question posed. These aspects could be categorised into nine subject areas. Furthermore, 12 trainee doctors commented on the subject areas already mentioned and added missing aspects. Most of the comments related to the organisation of the training, followed by comments on the requirements of the training regulations and aspects of labour law. In addition, tips were given on working conditions and perspectives after the training, support structures during training, and the healthcare system.

Conclusion

Using a methodologically pragmatic design, valuable tips and experiences from trainee doctors were collected for students before they began their training. The results can be used throughout Germany and can facilitate entry into the training. Especially given that students have little opportunity to experience outpatient work and outpatient doctors, it is important to pass on tips on career planning, e.g. via such a collection. It is a useful addition to the personal transfer of experience in outpatient training.
