摘要

Background

Prevention can reduce the incidence of cancer, but it is often underutilized. To raise awareness of cancer prevention and support informed decisions about preventive measures based on an individual risk calculation, we developed in an interdisciplinary working group a prevention app targeting the three most common types of tumors—breast, colorectal and prostate cancer—for use in outpatient care. This pilot study aimed to integrate user perspectives into the development process to enhance uptake. This pilot study focused specifically on the user perspective during development in order to identify challenges at an early stage and ensure successful use in outpatient care.

Materials and methods

A qualitative study employed guideline-based focus groups and interviews with 11 outpatient specialists (general medicine [8/11], gastroenterology, gynecology, urology) and 10 patients. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis according to Kuckartz with MAXQDA software.

Results

The app was perceived as a valuable source of information. Patients expressed a desire for more positive and personalized feedback, while physicians anticipated that the app would motivate individuals—especially those less inclined towards prevention—to engage in screening measures and ultimately decrease consulting time. General practice was identified as the ideal channel for app dissemination.

Conclusion

The objective of developing a practical and user-oriented prevention app was successfully achieved. The positive evaluation regarding the app’s informational content and its potential to motivate individuals to engage in cancer prevention suggests promising outcomes in practical application. These will be examined in future studies.
