<p>The realisation of outpatient research projects in general practice (GP) is often difficult because specially qualified medical assistants (MAs) are rarely available to support projects in practices. Part&#xa0;2 of the series of articles on “Research and workforce development for general practice” explores the question of how MAs could be trained and further educated in a&#xa0;structured way for collaboration in research projects. The presentations are based on discussions at the 2023 DEGAM Congress (German society for General Practice/Family Medicine) and a&#xa0;DESAM-ForNet research symposium (Initiative of German Practice-Based Research Networks). A&#xa0;framework concept was developed for training and further education of MAs. The aim of these practical modules is to establish a&#xa0;research culture among MAs at an early stage. A&#xa0;basic module for both trainees and trained MAs imparts fundamental knowledge such as research methodology and study formats. A&#xa0;specialisation module is aimed at trained MAs and is based on international standards such as Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in order to consolidate the content from the basic module. The module ‘Research manager’ enables continuous further training and qualifies MAs for tasks in research projects. Potential barriers, such as the perception of research as a&#xa0;purely academic field, are addressed, discussed and dispelled. The next step will be to work out how the modules can be integrated into the training and further education of MAs and how the skills acquired can be recognised, for example in a&#xa0;curriculum.</p>
