Maternal and child health services at Hiwot Fana comprehensive specialized hospital, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia: a descriptive analysis based on hospital secondary data

To describe maternal and child health services at Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital between 2018 and 2021, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia.

This is a descriptive analyses based on hospital secondary data extracted from the Health Management Information System (HMIS) database of Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (HFCSH). The data encompasses a four-year period, from 2018 to 2021, and focuses on selected maternal and child health services offered by the hospital.

There is a clear evidence that first Antenatal Care service, Postnatal Care and HIV testing at different entry points for mothers has increased in the year 2021 compared to the past three years in the Hospital. Similarly, Neonatal admission has shown gradual increment through the four years. Neonatal death registered in the hospital showed gradual rise in three years and decreased in the final year of 2021. The increasing pattern in some of the service areas, suggests that the service given in the hospital is expanding through the years with possible indication of the increased health seeking behavior of the population. While, it was observed that the total number of delivery showed slight decline over the four-year period, the number of mothers delivering through cesarean section showed increment in the first 3 years. The result from this analysis only shows the selected services provided by Maternal and Child Health unit of HFCSH in the four years and further exploration on service improvement and patient outcomes would yield a better understanding of the hospital services.
