Introduction <p>Patient education is a fundamental aspect of healthcare and an essential component of treatment. The purpose of this education is to help individuals improve their quality of life, achieve optimal physical and mental development, and enhance their self-confidence. This study aimed Enhancing Patient Education Through Health Literacy: Findings from a Cross-Sectional Study in Northern Iran.</p> Materials and methods <p>In this cross-sectional analytical study conducted during 2022–2023 at Al-Zahra (S) Rasht Hospital, 231 hospitalized patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected using a random quota sampling method. Sample size was calculated using the Cochran formula, with proportional allocation across hospital wards (postpartum, gynecological surgery, NICU, and labor). The data collection tools included a demographic characteristics form, a validated questionnaire to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse education (with eight domains scored on a three-point scale), and the Jihadaneshgahi Health Sciences Research Institute’s health literacy questionnaire (consisting of 33 items across five subscales: reading, access, comprehension, evaluation, and decision-making). Data were analyzed using SPSS 24 statistical software, alongside chi-square tests, Fisher’s exact test, and partial correlation analysis. The study received ethical approval from Guilan University of Medical Sciences (approval code IR.GUMS.REC.1403.145).</p> Results <p>The average effectiveness score of patient education was highest in the areas of follow-up after discharge (77.9% rated as good), lifestyle (74.9% rated as good), and knowledge of the treating physician and nurse (68.4% rated as good). In contrast, disease knowledge (28.1% rated as good) and satisfaction with training (26.8% rated as good) received the lowest scores. The overall mean health literacy score was 68.4 (SD = 12.7) on a 0-100 scale, indicating adequate health literacy. There was a significant positive correlation between health literacy scores and the effectiveness of training in medication (<i>r</i> = 0.520, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), lifestyle (<i>r</i> = 0.411, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), self-care (<i>r</i> = − 0.550, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), and satisfaction (<i>r</i> = 0.445, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001) domains. Demographic factors, including education level, occupation, age, and marital status, showed significant associations with both health literacy dimensions and patient education effectiveness.</p> Conclusion <p>This study demonstrates that health literacy significantly influences the effectiveness of education provided to patients. Given the high incidence of limited health literacy in Iran (56%), healthcare providers should consider patients’ health literacy levels when designing educational interventions to improve outcomes. Educational approaches should be tailored to patients’ health literacy levels, particularly in domains such as medication understanding and self-care.</p>

Demographic factors, including education level, occupation, age, and marital status, showed significant associations with both health literacy dimensions and patient education effectiveness.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates that health literacy significantly influences the effectiveness of education provided to patients. Given the high incidence of limited health literacy in Iran (56%), healthcare providers should consider patients’ health literacy levels when designing educational interventions to improve outcomes. Educational approaches should be tailored to patients’ health literacy levels, particularly in domains such as medication understanding and self-care.
