Urban realities: a zonal-level assessment of quality of life in Lucknow city’s slums based on access to amenities and proximity to services

Slums as a by-product are the result of unplanned and uncontrolled urbanization which occurs when cities grow faster than urban governance. The study delves into the nuanced urban realities of the slums of Lucknow city by assessing the status of slums and examining the levels of quality of life through a zonal comparative analysis. By focusing on access to amenities and proximity to services, the study aims to highlight the disparities within the city and provide insights for future policy interventions to enhance urban living conditions. For determining the Quality of Life in slums, Composite Index and Standard Deviation techniques have been employed to capture the multifaceted dimensions of the urban well-being of slum dwellers. The composite index amalgamates key indicators related to accessibility to amenities, such as housing conditions, income, sanitation, water accessibility, and electricity provision, solid waste management with measures of proximity to vital services like healthcare, education, roads, street lights and social welfare engagements. The result reveals that Zone 1 and 2 are classified as having good quality of life, Zone 3 and 5 as having medium quality of life, and Zone 4 and 6 as having poor quality of life. While this study categorizes Lucknow’s slums into three levels of QoL, the overall condition remains poor, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms and targeted interventions. The disparities in QoL across zones highlight the structural drivers of urban inequality in Lucknow’s slums. The findings foster a holistic understanding of the interplay between access to amenities and the proximity to essential services in shaping the quality of life of the slum dwellers of Lucknow city. The study aims to contribute valuable insights for urban planners, policymakers, and community stakeholders by identifying specific strengths and challenges within different zones.
