Pluralism, Disability and Inclusive Artificial Intelligence

This paper explores the intersection of disability studies and artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on how AI can be designed inclusively to support diverse user needs. Drawing on the philosophy of disability, the study argues for a pluralistic understanding of disability and shows how AI systems can overcome traditional norms of ability by integrating the principles of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). The ICF’s biopsychosocial framework, emphasising the dynamic interaction between health conditions, environmental factors, and personal factors, serves as a foundation for designing AI tools that foster accessibility, equity, and social participation. Additionally, the paper incorporates Ludwig Wittgenstein’s concepts of “language games” and “family resemblances” to highlight the importance of contextual and cultural sensitivity in AI systems. Through these philosophical perspectives, the paper advocates for AI technologies that not only support individual adaptability but also challenge normative biases, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive educational and societal landscape. This approach underscores the ethical and practical imperatives of creating AI systems that respect and respond to human diversity, with applications extending to education, healthcare, and other sectors. Importantly, I do not attempt an exegesis of Wittgenstein’s texts; rather, I apply his ideas to contemporary challenges. This situates the work within a growing body of literature connecting Wittgenstein’s philosophy to disability studies and AI research, while aiming to provide a novel synthesis that informs the design of inclusive AI systems.
