A Vision on Societal Research on Quantum Technologies in Seven Directions: Introducing the Topical Collection Quantum Society
摘要
In this communication I explore the issues that societal research on quantum technologies can take up, introducing seven dimensions in which this research can expand. Also the question of a possible specificity of societal research on quantum technologies is examined. Three candidates for this specificity, being the unintelligibility of quantum, the opportunity to intervene, and the geopolitics of technology, are introduced and discussed. It is argued that these candidates guide societal research on quantum technologies towards valuable opportunities. And, considering also the seven dimensions in which this research can expand, it may be concluded that quantum technologies direct societal research towards a more active and outgoing mode: organizing outreach, arriving at recommendation and co-designing, and stepping into the world of politics.
