Human material interactions in nanomedicine integrating psychological and neuroethical perspectives for nanoarchitectonics and patient experience

Nanomedicine has emerged as a defining frontier of next-generation medical materials, driven by advances in nanoscale design, biointerfacing, and functional integration with living systems. Beyond their established therapeutic and diagnostic roles, nanomaterials increasingly shape how patients perceive, interpret, and engage with medical technologies. This review examines nanomedicine from a human–material interaction perspective, integrating insights from materials science, health psychology, cognitive science, and neuroethics to highlight how nano-enabled medical materials influence emotional responses, cognitive appraisal, embodiment, and health-related behavior. Psychological responses are presented not as secondary effects but as emergent functional outcomes of advanced material–biological interfaces that directly affect acceptance, adherence, and long-term performance. Key domains discussed include trust and risk perception in nano-enabled diagnostics, cognitive load associated with continuous nanosensing, embodied experiences arising from implantable and neural nanointerfaces, and behavioral consequences such as adherence, over-reliance, and technological fatigue. These dimensions are unified through the proposed Material Mind Framework, which conceptualizes nanomedical materials as dynamic systems embedded within biological–emotional–cognitive–behavioral feedback loops. By framing nanomedicine as an interactive and psychologically active material system, this review outlines design, clinical, and regulatory considerations essential for the development of effective, ethical, and human-centered next-generation medical materials.
