<p>Environmental changes are associated with a decrease in the desire for children and the number of children desired. But what are the mechanisms behind these relationships? This brief report examines the role of two potential mediators: concerns for the future of a potential child and concerns for the environmental impact of having a child. The cross-sectional questionnaire completed online by 1260 childless individuals reveals that both types of concerns act as mediators between environmental changes and the desire for children and the number of children desired (with all indirect pathways showing significance). Nonetheless, concerns for the future of the child have, in some cases, a more substantial mediating effect compared to concerns for the environment. These findings strengthen an emerging literature and suggest important avenues for future research.</p>
