Introduction <p>The foundations for mental and physical development are established during the early childhood period. Previous research indicates that regular physical activity has a profound impact on children’s physical, mental, and cognitive functions. However, research on physical activity guidelines that affect the physical and mental development of early childhood remains insufficient. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between the go/no-go task, physical activity, and physical fitness in preschool children aged 3 to 5&#xa0;years.</p> Methods <p>This study measured the average number of steps and exercise step count as objective measures of physical activity and administered go/no-go tasks and physical fitness tests for 4&#xa0;weeks in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. There were 51 participants, including 10 boys and 9 girls aged 3&#xa0;years, 7 boys and 10 girls aged 4&#xa0;years, and 7 boys and 8 girls aged 5&#xa0;years.</p> Results <p>There were significant negative correlations between the number of errors in the go/no-go task and eyes-open single-leg stance (r = −&#xa0;0.52, p &lt; 0.001), 6-min walk (r = −&#xa0;0.42, p &lt; 0.01), exercise steps (r = −&#xa0;0.51, p &lt; 0.001), and average daily steps (r = −&#xa0;0.44, p = 0.001).</p> Conclusion <p>A significant correlation was found between physical attributes (step counts, exercise step counts of 4 METs or more, muscle strength, balance function, walking ability, and endurance) of 3 to 5-year-old children and the number of errors made in the go/no go task. These physical factors may contribute to the development of brain function in young children.</p>

Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between the go/no-go task, physical activity, and physical fitness in preschool children aged 3 to 5 years.

Methods

This study measured the average number of steps and exercise step count as objective measures of physical activity and administered go/no-go tasks and physical fitness tests for 4 weeks in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. There were 51 participants, including 10 boys and 9 girls aged 3 years, 7 boys and 10 girls aged 4 years, and 7 boys and 8 girls aged 5 years.

Results

There were significant negative correlations between the number of errors in the go/no-go task and eyes-open single-leg stance (r = − 0.52, p < 0.001), 6-min walk (r = − 0.42, p < 0.01), exercise steps (r = − 0.51, p < 0.001), and average daily steps (r = − 0.44, p = 0.001).

Conclusion
